Working to accelerate the transformation of the steel industry value chain, reinforce industrial resilience and the energy transition by providing steelmakers with low-carbon iron for the production of greener steel, GravitHy has contracted Danieli to supply an ENERGIRON Zero reformer DR plant to produce 2 Mtpy of HBI by using mainly hydrogen and electric power.
ENERGIRON is the DRI technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli.
The plant will be installed in the industrial port area of Fos-sur-Mer, France. There, GravitHy's new DRI plant will produce Hot Briquetted Iron –HBI, with a metallization up to 96%, and a carbon content of 1% –which is needed during the steel melting process.
GravitHy project foresees onsite production of low-carbon hydrogen, for use as fuel by the ENERGIRON process.
In addition to the use of hydrogen as reducing gas, the direct reduction plant will feature electric process gas heating, making the green DR processing performed by ENERGIRON hydrogen plants more efficient, resilient and even greener. Electric gas heating is the latest technology step towards full decarbonization, and it is applicable also to existing plants.
The plant is expected to start operation by end 2030.
